Fred Baakus
Residency: Early 1900's
Fred owned the American Steel and Wire Company in Chicago and
was the inventor of the chain link fence. He built Awassa Lodge
on Lake Content and owned all the shoreline of Lake Content
except one piece. He also owned the shoreline on Big St. Germain
Lake from Normandy Court Road all the way past Leisure Lodge (YZ
Resort). Fred was well-liked in our area and is credited
for doing many positive things here. His biggest contribution
was managing to bring electricity to our area. He also helped
many people who lived here. For instance, he paid the expenses
for Carl Eliason
to attend the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He also helped
Carl financially to start Eliason's Lumber Company in Sayner,
WI.

David Bailey

David is the son of
Donald and Mary
Bailey. He is currently employed in area construction.

Donald Bailey
Residency: Late 1960's
Don and his wife,
Mary, owned and
operated Bailey's Resort on Pickerel Lake (Cty J) for many
years. He was a very active chief of the St. Germain Fire and
Rescue Department and his efforts laid the foundation for the
fire department as it is today. He worked ceaselessly to bring
new equipment and needed improvements to the department. He
challenged the State of Wisconsin to lower the town's fire
insurance rating and succeeded with an almost flawless
performance by the fire department. Two of his last projects
shortly before his death were to have a hook-and-ladder truck in
the department and a Forest Fire Conditions sign installed in
front of the Chamber of Commerce. He worked on these with his
usual enthusiasm.
Although he did not live to see either one of these projects
completed, the fire department did get the hook and ladder
truck. The fire conditions sign was purchased by
Gayle Cook and
installed as Donald wanted in front of the Chamber of Commerce.
The Don Bailey Memorial Tree
was planted in front of the fire department in memory of his
dedication and many achievements.

Mary was married to
Donald Bailey and is the mother of
David Bailey. She shared in the
responsibility and management of Bailey's Resort on Pickerel
Lake. The resort was sold upon Donald's death and Mary moved to
Minoqua, WI.

the operations and management of the St. Germain Motel (Mastej's
Resort and Motel).

Bob and his wife,
Jackie, purchased Mastej's Resort and Motel
on West Bay of Little St. Germain Lake in 1982. They changed the
name to St. Germain Motel. Bob is also a well-known professional
wildlife photographer.

Lisa is a daughter of

Neal Baseler
Residency: 1972
Neal operated a gunsmith shop in his home after moving to St.
Germain in 1972. He lived here for 22 years, then sold his home
and moved to New Braunfels, TX in 1994. His home and lot were
purchased by Kris Oil to construct the Citgo station. Kris Oil
moved the house to a lot they purchased on Lindstrom Lane and
sold it. Neal's house was located about where the diesel pumps
are at the Citgo gas station.

David operated
Lynn-Ann's Campground on Big St. Germain for many years until he
retired and turned management over to his daughter,
Heather, and her husband.

boxer who later moved here after forced retirement due to
irrepairable physical damage.

Bonnie was married to

Weslaski
and helped operate and manage the
Muskie Inn.
After Lee passed away, Bonnie retained ownership of the building
that housed the supper club, but the rest of the resort has been
condoed and is known as Deer Run. She
eventually remarried to a man who's last name is Behling (First
name unknown).

Boyd purchased Idle Hours Resort on East Bay of Little St.
Germain Lake in the mid-1970's. He operated this resort for many
years, then turned management over to his son,
Thomas. Boyd is also a CPA and
operates an accounting and tax preparation service out of his
home.

worked at Nelson Ace Hardware in Eagle River, WI for many years.

Tim is a son of

Jack was a well-known
and popular muskie guide (now retired). He is the father of
David and Paul
Bohnen. Jack is especially well-versed on the structure of Big
St. Germain Lake. He produced the "skunktail" which was made of
natural hair from the tails of skunks. It was one of the most
effective muskie bucktails made.

tavern which was located on Hwy 155. She eventually sold the

for many years. She is currently retired and living on South Bay
of Little St. Germain Lake

Elsie and her husband, Herbert,
purchased and renamed Elbert's Resort. The
name was taken from "El" in Elsie and "Bert" in Herbert. She
helped in the operations and management of this resort until it
was sold in 1953. She and her husband then moved away and
nothing more is known of Elsie.

Herbert purchased Elbert's Resort
(Its original name is unknown) on West Bay of Little St. Germain
Lake. He named it Elbert's after his wife's and his name. The
"El" was from Elsie and the "Bert" was from Herbert. He operated
the resort until he sold it to Theodore
Pieniazek, Sr. in 1953. Nothing is known of Herbert and
Elsie Brown after the resort was sold.
