William Coda

Residency: 1965

Known in our area as Billy, he was a son of Eugene and Ruth Coda and a brother to Douglas Coda. He drowned in the Wisconsin River near the dead end camp fire site on the road in Planting Ground. He and two friends were sitting around a campfire that night. He decided that he was going to swim across the river and back. He returned and soon decided to do it again. Whether this second swim was his own idea or through a dare or bet is unknown. After some time passed the two friends became concerned, went to the bank of the river, and called for him, but there was no answer. They also could not make out any sign of him in the dark river or on the opposite bank. They contacted the authorities and his body was eventually found in the river. It was determined that he was probably overcome by hypothermia and exhaustion on that chilly spring evening.

Date deceased: Spring of 1993
Cause of death: Drowned in Wisconsin River
